real quick

last night David Rovics played, and then we stayed up super late watching riot porn. This place is like a crimethinc wet dream sometimes. Seda and I argued and are not on such hot terms at the moment. Das ist alles.

a lot of stuff in a short space.

sorry for covering a lot of material in a short space, but lappy is busted so I'm using a common computer with a french keyboard. It's so difficult to do. I'm releasing some pictures to you as a supplement for words: http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/veganbikepunk/Photos

So the past few days were not as terrifying, since we had a place to stay the whole time. We checked out some radical cafès, went to a punk/electronica festival, I got a tooth pulled, and we went to a planning meeting for the g8.

Where to start... the radical cafès were nice, one even reminded me of the Red and Black a little, but it didn't quite cut it... i sincerely miss dragon noodles.

I got my tooth pulled, which was a pretty strange experience... I just walked in to a nearby dentist complaining of pain and he just immediately sat me down, numbed my mouth and scraped all the nerves out of my aching tooth, then scheduled me for the next day to have it removed. When I got it removed he handed me a bill and asked if I wanted to pay cash or have my insurance deal with it. I said insurance and that was the end of that. I had my insurance card but he never asked to see it. He never even got my name until the end of the exchange. Rad yet surprising to see a medical professional whose first concern is health. So, my jaw still hurts and I'm terrified of getting dry socket, but at least that damn tooth is gone.

At one point the people in our squat let us know of a radical festival that would be going on, and we decided we would tag along. It was in a big park, and when we first got there, we figured we had accidentally gotten ourselves into a hippie-jam-fest. One tent was playing this super-hippie electronica, and another was just playing hippie jam band music. Further down, though, we found the punk stage. We watched some band (Walls of Jericho, I think) play for a while, then they finished and another band started setting up and then playing, and they were this weird ska-polka mix... not really my thing, but oh well. In any event, during their first song it started raining, and by their second song the wind was nearly knocking people over and there was hail bigger than bb's. Everyone huddled under stages and used tarps to cover the equipment and to cover the stages, meanwhile people were being pelted in the head with these huge hail crystals. It was the worst weather i've ever seen and the tarps above us were filling up and dumping water on me. When it started to die down we ran to the car and drove back home, just in time to take the subway to the g8 planning meeting, which was interesting but contained no information of relevance here.

So then yesterday we caught the train up to Rostock, and arrived at the convergence center, zhich is RAD AS SHIT. I got the tour then spent a few hours in the kitchen cooking, then attended a workshop on sexism and sexist violence, which was actually more of a recruitment ploy to get people to sign up to hang out at their safe space area and do shifts on the phone in case of sexist violence or anything like that, which I can't really do for two reasons...

1) I'm going to be split between two camps and

2) In the work I've done regarding sexist violence I've come to the conclusion that a man (or boi)'s place in these scenarios is almost never up front. The patriarchal reality is that the vast majority of the time the perp is male and the affected person is either female, child, or trans. And although not always, but usually, a woman who has been sexually assaulted wants nothing less in the immediate followup than to deal with a man.

I made it clear that I will be around and if anything is needed of me, I would be beyond willing to help.

So while I'm here I'm gonna do some grammar checking for the english portion of germany imc, and hopefully soon we will be on our way to camp rostock.

Portland Uber Alles

So that morning we compiled a list of meetup points that the G8 sites had reccomended for getting info. The nearest was a bar, called The Clash, so we would go there first. The second was an infoshop called The New Yorck, and the third was a squat, about to be evicted, called The Köpi. We took the subwaz to The Clash, only to find it was closed... not terribly surprising since it was now 12.30 in the morning, but things are of course much different here, especially concerning vices. So we sat and we waited for it to open. After a while someone came by and let us know that they usually open around 3pm. So we went to get some food and drink while we waited. We went around the corner and got some samosas and beers. Then we went back to The Clash, which was now open, and got more beers. We asked about g8 info and they informed us that the info for meetups and such came out tomorrow, and they'd be happy to tell us where to go tomorrow. I was briefly stumped as to what to do, but Seda immediately jumped in and said of a farm she knew the owner of in the East. We agreed that it would be fun to go there, but Seda said she couldn't call her until the evening. So we went to get Vegan food (The Clash had steak on their menu, and when we ordered something that looked vegan, they said their menu wasn't up to date.)

So we went around the corner to a restaurant, and ate some bougie vegan food and sat on a bench until Seda was ready to call her friend. She gave us directions, which lead us to the regional trains, which went long distances, and are kinda spendy (a series of regional trains are how we got to Berlin). So we did our best to manage the subway system to get to the train station at Lichtenberg. We rode trains for an hour and a half or so until we were there. She was waiting in a car for us there, and we crammed ourselves in. When we got there she introduced herself as Carmen, and we found out she didn't own the farm, she just lived and worked there. She was very hospitable and generally plesant. We all passed out just about as soon as we got there, and woke up that morning at 7 or so.

When we first woke up we were very afraid of running into other people there (social anxiety is magnified by at least 10 when you don't speak the language). But when we got into the kitchen there was freshly baked bread laid out for us and a note saying to help ourselves. We ate well, and went back to the room to cower. When it was lunchtime for Carmen, she came in and said that everyone was saying it was weird that they didn't see us. So we went out and took a quick tour of the farm, eating little bits and pieces of things growing. Then it was time for her to go back to work, so I went back to the room and took a quick nap while Vanc, Säed and Seda swam in the pond. Later Carmen came back and gave me, Seda, and Säed a more full tour while Vanc napped. We met the horsies, Max and Mori. We met cows, who I gave various beautiful names to. And we met bees, whom I cowered from.

Then we had a picnic dinner of pasta and salad, and I played on the swing. It was a beautiful relaxing day, all in all. So we went to sleep again, and the next day, we walked the half mile to the bus stop and got on, to go to Frankfurt Am Oder (a different Frankfurt) where we caught a train back to Berlin.

Once in Berlin we went back to The Clash. There they had a list of info for travellers coming for the g8. They said if you needed a place to stay, you should inquire at an infopoint. So we inquired, and they hooked us up with a squat that had an open room. We ate soup while we waited to go there, and checked out the radical bookstore from the Slingshot (it was like 20 meters away). While there, a man came in to let us know there had been a raid and there would be a rally that night. I really really wanted to go, but we had confirmed with the squat that we'd be there at 7, and that's when the rally was. Oh wells. I want to give you more info about the squat, but I can't while I'm still there, security is becoming a real issue with all the raids. But rest assured, we now have a nice place to stay, in a room of our own, for the rest of the time we're in Berlin.

Toodles.

another day

Ok, so I keep thinking I'll have a boring day, and then some exciting shit comes up so I have to blog about it.

5/18

So, we woke up in this radical space at like 6. Vanc wanted another hour of sleep so we set the alarm back and woke up at 7. We put on our packs, left them a note and two of Yyks's stickers, and set off on our way. We went back to the same spot except further down the road, close to where the the Autobahn starts. We waited there until 11, getting no ride offers, and several people yelling at us or flipping us off, and then left to use the internet as I had replied to someone's rideshare offer and their plan was to leave at 3pm.

I checked my email and there was nothing from then, but I was not feeling much like hitching, so I thought on a hunch I'd ask the train person about the train I had reccomended to me, the "Happy-Weekender". I did and the deal with it is it's 33euro for up to five people to ride the city trains as much as they want on Saturday or Sunday. We decided we'd leave, hang out a bit, see if we felt like continuing to hitch, and come back to the station that night if we didn't. We sat around by the fountain. We sat in the internet "cafe", we sat in the park in the middle of the city. We sat and we sat and we sat. We didn't feel like hitching more after the events of this morning. We decided we'd take the weekender as it only amounted to 11euro a piece... and if we could find two who wanted to travel with us, even less if they felt like paying.

So we got the tickets, and posted on the g8 listserv that if anyone here wanted to get to Berlin, this would be the way. And now we had a new dilema. It was 7pm and we had until 5am for the train to come. What to do? We sat in the park for an hour but got bored of that and went to the train station to watch the trains and do some hardcore waiting. After like 30 minutes we were fucking tired as shit (very little sleep this whole trip, never more than 4 hours, 2 hours being standard), and we were starting to discuss getting a room.

Before we could decide either way, two anarcho-punx who were at the Subhumans show were walking around the train station, lost. They didn't recognize us from the show, but they recognized us as american punx. They came up to us and asked "are you americans?" and we said yes. "Do you know where the youth center is?" he asked, and we said no. Truth be told I didn't (/still don't) know what a youth center is. When I picture it, I picture a Boys and Girls Club or something. One of them, who I later learned was named Obi, who was decked out from his hat to the cuffs of his pants in Animal Liberation patches explained that one of the bands playing that night was from america. They were called blackfire and that name sounded incredibly familiar to me, but I couldn't place from where. Obi's friend (snutzeiger, I think was his name we later found out... he tried to explain the joke inherent in his name but I didn't entirely get it. Best I can tell, that's the word here for a spice similar to nutritional yeast or something) asked us what we were doing tonight, and we told them. They were surprised and asked if we'd rather join them searching for the show, and we said yes.

So we got up and started walking outside with them. They were asking random people on the street where it was, and one eventually told them which metro stop to get off at. So we got on the metro and rode for quite a while. It was a frightening ride because we hadn't gotten fare and there was security on the train, but I'm pretty sure the security was anti-terrorism security, and they never talked to us. While on the train Snutz told us the other name of the band, Asrael, which also rang a bell. Saed remembered that Shane had listened to Blackfire and I had mistaken them for Creed. We also talked about the different scenes in our cities and stuff. At one point they were talking in German and I was able to glean what they were saying with my knowledge of german (which is rapidly expanding)... Snutz were saying "Are they anarchists?" to which Obi replied "They're vegan and one is with the syndicate (iww), they must be." To which Snutz said something reminding Obi that vegan doesn't necessarily mean anarchist and Obi agreed.

When we got off the train Obi started asking people on the street again. Most people had no idea, but then we ran into some punx. Obi asked them and they replied in English that they were going there now. We followed them and when we got to the door, the people taking cover were older, and so it kind of reminded me of a Boys and Girls club. Snutz told them where we were from and they got very excited. They were really glad to see someone from the states for some reason. They showed us a place where our packs could be locked up and we went into the show were Azrael was playing... and they were fucking RAD. They were some pretty straight-up street punk stuff and pretty political... plus they had some goofball songs street punx are known for "Stay true, stay punk, stay oi!, stay drunk". Plus their songs were like 80% in English. Plus, once inside the venue part of the place, we were further confused as to what a youth house is. There was a no smoking sign, which was literally the first we've seen since we got to Germany (but people were still smoking) and the people there were in two distinct groups: The punx and the kids. The punx were just the punx, same as the punx anywhere... but the kids were different, they were like 14 and had system of a down and linkin park and rammstein clothes on. Also, the place had a bar (though pretty much if a place sells anything here, it sells alcohol also). We went out side with Snutz while we waited for Blackfire, and talked about Nazis. They don't have more than one or two Nazis in Frankfurt, but if you go out into the outlying countryside you find 20% or more of nazis. There are some nazi skins in berlin, but not many. Snutz gave us some stickers... they were a play on the "Good Night White Pride" Patch... they said "Gute Nacht Burschenpracht", which Snutz explained meant "Good night, fratboy" and the picture was of a punk beating up a boy in a suit. Snutz told us that the fraternities here are all in league with the far right and some even with the nazis propper. Plus they're homophobes and sexists and jerks here too. Then a scumfuck came over and was being drunk and macho and sort of trying to drive home the point "Just because you're american, doesn't mean you're better than us." Point well taken. We went in for the Blackfire.

I liked Blackfire's message for the most part "no borders, reclaim the earth..." but their music kind of sucked. It did sound kind of like creed at times. Whatever though, people seemed to enjoy it. I only really was annoyed when they started talking about petitions. That was the only tactic they mentioned and they spent like 15 minutes trying to convince people that they work.

5/19

They finished around midnight, and the last metro left at 1, so we had a bit of time, but wanted to be sure we made it, so we started to leave. We asked Obi if he'd be coming back with us (Snutz had already left). Things kept sidetracking us though, we talked to Blackfire about the g8 (they won't be there, missing it by a day!), the older folx who run the venue wanted to buy us drinks... we had juice. And Obi took forever saying goodbyes, so eventually we told him we had to leave and left. He arrived right at the moment the train was leaving and luckily made it. Him and his friend (actually the person seemed to be burgling his time but it's hard to tell in another language) absolutely insisted we come clubbing with them (though it was a club that plays punk). We declined just as vehemently as he had insisted, and they gave up. I gave obi my email and he said he'd see me in Heiligendam. I didn't know he was going to be there, but now I'm excited! Obi was very nice.

When we got to the train station Vanc fell asleep up against his pack and me and saed walked in circles for 3 hours. It was too cold to sleep. Then the train showed up and we got on. There were 3 connections, and we spent the whole time scared of missing our stop.

We arrived at the Berlin Zoo at 1:30pm. We called someone who had offered us a place to stay until Sunday (Hanna). Her roommate answered and gave us directions. We took a long and windy subway trip through this huge fucking city. This massive, enormous tremendous, city. The population isn't quite as high as NYC, but the amount of people taking public transit at midday is staggering. Also this city has 12 boroughs and is just under twice as big geographically as NYC. It's funny Frankfurt reminded me of Portland in a lot of ways, and Berlin reminds me of NYC in a lot of ways... it was like a repeat of the last trip. It also is full of spikey punx. By which I mean I saw more yesterday just commuting than exist in all of Portland.

We got to Hanna's place and met Hanna and her roommates, one of whom is named Suzanne. We asked where we could get vegan food and we were referred to a chain called Bio-Foods, which seems very much like New Seasons. There we each got a type of tofu and a grain and bought it and sat down and ate. We wanted to eat first because we were actually slightly ill with hunger and shopping seemed like a bad idea then. Then we got back into the store to do some more long-term shopping, but we couldn't find anything that seemed like it'd be ok to travel with. Fuck. Also we were tired as shit, and so we got some dried apricots and granola and went back to Hannas. (Oh yeah, we took Karl-Marx St. to get there, that was funny. We're in East Berlin at the moment. One of the main things I want to see here is a big statue of Marx and Engels.) On the way back me and Vanc argued about whether or not it's worth it to expend energy looking for a place to stay tomorrow, he said it would be better to just sleep in a park. I've slept in a number of parks in my years, but this town is huge and crime-ridden. Crime-ridden in both the good and bad way, which means pigs and which means muggers. I'm uncomfortable doing that, and we were kind of angry at each other talking about it. I feel like my safety is paramount to me. I'm still a little upset over that. When we got there Hanna was gone but had left a note with radical things going on that night and places to plug in and stuff. It's hard because of the language barrier to pick up on a lot of things, but the implication may have been that we should use those contacts to look for a place to stay. Once there Vanc checked his email and Seda was in Berlin and had no place to stay, so was going to sit at the main train station until we met her. Vanc asked if she could stay here overnight and they said yes and Vanc left to get her. I woke up to her hugging me muttered some questions and got answers I've since forgotten.

I woke up again at 5am, checked my email and started blogging. At 7am I was caught up! And that is now! Yay, caught up on the blog for now, I'm actually very excited, but here's some technical notes on the blog:

Now that I'm in Berlin, for security reasons I won't be giving any more specific information about travelling until it's done. I can't tell you when we're going to leave or how we're going to get there or what city we're going to next. We also haven't posted any pictures, this has been for the reason that we lost our usb cable, but Seda has one. I need to ask the group if it's a good idea to post the photos or not, but we'll see. Today I think we'll go to the meetup spaces and see what we can do with ourselves to plug into this campaign.

a long'un

Oh yeah, please excuse the spelling and grammer, this keyboard is a jerkass and I'm quite tired all the time lately.

Where was I...

so, when we woke up that evening, it was around midnight. I checked my email to see that we had recieved word back from a post on the g8 listserv asking about hitching out of berlin. This cool site called hitchwiki had a perfect spot... legal, plenty of room to see you, plenty of room to stop. So we walked to that place (it was only like 2km away). Looked fucking perfect so we walked back to the hotel, grabbing cardboard along the way to make a Berlin sign. We hung out and packed and stulff, and when we were done, it was approaching 6 (7 being the time the site reccomended hitting the road). We walked back to the spot and flew our sign. And we waited... And it rained... and we waited... and our sign discintigrated, and we waited... and nothing. Eventually, around 11 a car stopped and we started putting our packs in. "you going to Berlin?" I asked. "Nein," came the replay, "Dusseldorf." Dusseldorf was not on our way. 20 minutes later another car stopped. I was more cautious this time... "Berlin?" "Nein. West." Fuck. We waited another 2 or 3 hours before we called it quits. Sad. Quite sad. We went to the Haupvonhoff train center to ask about train tickets to Berlin. The woman seemed to dislike us and told us it was 104 euro. Fuck that shit. That's just under my budget for this whole trip.

So we went back to the Internet cafe to get our email-check on. Someone had replied that they hadn't been to Frankfurt, but they searched the net and found a squat and a cafe that seemed semi-radical. The squat had a website, so I went to it. The Subhumans were playing there tonight, and we were hopeful that we could stay there if we told them what was up. Our hope was to hitch the next day. They had no email address or phone number and were 7km away. Do-able if we worked our asses off at figuring out public trainsit (it's so difficult in another language... painfully difficult). Before we did that I found out where the cafe was, and it was realtively close, around 3km. So we decided we'd walk there and if it was radical and people spoke english we'd ask how to get to the squat. As we walked, it became wildly apparant that we were entering a new side of town. Until then, all of berlin had been touristy and lame as shit. In this district, every block had a smash g8 poster wheat-pasted up, most blocks had 2 or 3. As we got closer, we saw more and more (A)'s tagged up.

When we got there, we were in awe. The whole place was tagged with radical graffiti except the windows, which were filled with fliers about radical events. Across the street Anarchy, Smash the G8 and Carlo Lives were tagged up in Greek. The shop was closed, so we decided we'd wait outside (we knew it would be open later as the emailer said they were going to have a womyn-only thing that night, so we figured we'd dip in and say hi and see if there was anywhere to stay and say hi. Instead of that, two people showed up and tried to get in. They asked us if we were there for the show. When we asked what show they said Subhumans of course. It turned out the subhumans were playing there and not at the squat. They showed us around to the side entrance. Inside were around 6 anarcho-punks setting up for the show. Once inside it dawned on us... this was more than twice as big as the biggest radical space we had seen. They had a large-venue-sized area in the back, where they were moving things around in preparation for the show. One of the womyn who showed up asked where we were from. We told her Portland, OR and she said "You have too much money." It was a pretty simple off-the-cuff remark, but it cut pretty deep. I was thinking of arguments against that, but I was sort of shocked, and her english wasn't so great, so I'm not sure if I could effectively articulate it anyway. We were all sort of downtrodden after that. Our hopes of being greeted by friendly radicals just like us were dashed. Though she was only one person.

We introduced ourselves to the others and asked if there was any way we could help. They needed help in the general 'move heavy shit around' type of way, and we gladly obliged, though Vanc and Saed weren't doin so hot for lack of sleep (saed especially). So we lugged shit around for an hour or so, then Dick from Subhumans showed up and we unloaded the P.A. One of the main people that managed the space (thomas, we later learned was his name) said that for helping unload the PA and help out, we were covered for admission. Good thing since we were/are low on money and I don't know how much admission would've been. He also offered me any drink I wanted from the cafe on the house. I ordered a beer since I'm still amused by the novelty of drinking in public and because I was feeling icky and socially awkward after that person's comment, and dealing with strangers who hardly spoke my language, and whose language I hardly spoke. It cut the edge a bit, but I was still pretty nervous.

We sat around and talked to people a little bit, including the 'too much money' person who was named Sonya, and who I had a relatively pleasant conversation with about differing cultures. I felt a bit better after that. Sonya's friend offered us vegan cookies and asked if we were vegan. We said yes and she said she was glad. Vanc tried to ask about dumpstering and she seemed really nervous and ran away. Language/culture barriers are really weird.

So we sat for a while as punx started trickling in. They looked just like american punx except blue-jeans instead of black ones or Carhartts. Some had black jeans, but none had Carhartts. Vanc asked Thomas if there was anywhere to nap and he showed them a space in a loft above the area in front of the stage, and they went up there, while I wrote the last blog. Dick sat down next to me and was checking his myspace, and I was minorly star-struck. I asked him if he was headed to Berlin and he said he just came from there. Shit. So he got up eventually and then I heard music (though at that point there were only maybe 30 punx there) and I thought they were starting so I cut my blog short and went to watch. It was just soundcheck but I decided that even though I wasn't particularly sleepy I'd lay down where vanc and saed were anyway. I slept like 20 minutes but the sound check was so fucking loud I couldn't sleep anymore. I went downstairs and watched some punx play foosball until the sound check finished, and went to sleep for an hour.

When I went downstairs there were between 2-300 punx at the venue. They were eating, drinking and being loud silly anarcho-punx. And to think, that morning we didn't think there was even one anarchist in Frankfurt. I woke vanc and saed up and we stood around for a while before the show started. There was a grindcore band first, that sang mostly in German but a little in English, but it was hard to tell for some songs since it was Grindcore. Their lyrics were pretty silly and cliche "Don't you understand, you are brainwashed" and "Fuck this/the world!" But whatever. They did a cover of Police Bastard and a grindcore cover of What A Wonderful World. After that Subhumans took the stage and played a fucking amazing set. They played all of my favorite Subhumans songs and only one Subhumans song I don't like (mickey mouse is dead). It was song after song he just kept going and going. Dick is nuts. He kept coughing and hacking shit up but he just kept singing and dancing as hard as he could. I love him. It was that way two years when I saw them. I imagine he can't keep doing that for much longer so I want to see them every chance I get.

After the show we were scared. We were too awkward to ask anyone if we could stay with them. The one person I had met and talked to a bit came up to me and asked where I was staying, which I took to be an offer in my head. I said I didn't know, maybe a park and she said we should talk to people and see if we can stay with them. She said she'd ask around too. We decided to hang around until people were leaving then go to the nearest park and wait till sunrise to hitch. We hung around for a while before Thomas met up with us and asked where we were staying, and we told him our plan. He said it was too cold for that, so we could stay at this space, even though generally nobody was allowed to sleep there. He told us to hide a little if we were laying down before people were leaving because then they'd want to sleep there too. We hung out a bit and talked to the Iraq Veterans Against the War, who were also here for the G8 and who spoke at the show before the Subhumans went on. They were pretty cool, but had no advice on getting to Berlin. The friend they were staying with was from Olympia, so we talked about the pacific NW for a while. Eventually the subject of the effigy came up, which sucked, because we were right in front of the IVAW guy. It was a pretty tense conversation but they were fairly reasonable about it. The vet less so, but I felt like he was just now starting to decompress and move away from what he had been taught in the marines. I gave him a "we don't support the troops zine, which he took and said he'd read. One of their friends who was from here judging from his accent gave us the advice of asking about reigonal trains rather than express trains. We said we'd keep that in mind but we had a good feeling about the next day.

Oh yeah, the reason all the businesses had been closed that day and not many cars had gone by was that it was fathers day here, which is a no work day.

So we went back to our sleeping space, and laid down. We sat around talking for a while until there was only the very distant sound of one or two people. We were unrolling our sleeping bags when a man walked in and said something in German. I said "we don't speak german" and he said in English "we are closing RIGHT NOW" and we replied "Oh, Thomas had said we could stay here" to which he replied "I don't care, you can't sleep here. You have to go." We figured he misunderstood so we started explaining on other words more slowly. It became clear that he understood what we were saying, but he he didn't care. Shitty. He was loud and angry too, which is expecially scary in German. He walked away as we started re-packing our stuff. Scared and confused and sad. I heard him talking to Thomas and then them exchanging a few sentences and then Thomas walked into the room we were in and apologised saying there was a miscommunication and we could stay there. The other man walked in also and apologised. They left and we pulled out our sleeping bags and went to sleep.

That was, just to clarify last night... I'm trying to get caught up to present time before I send out any emails, because a good portion of what I'll be sending out is updates, so if I don't email you for a few days that's why. There's like no free wifi in this town, the internet is monopolized by internet "cafes" that actually don't even have coffee, just computers, but hopefully that will be different in Berlin.

long-awaited updates

will have to be slightly longer awaited. I am in the middle of one of the most important parts of what the journey has been so far, but i want to do this in some sembelance of order, and I don't know how much time I have.

So, I skimmed the topic of the plane ride, but here's how it went...

We got swited to Luthansa from United, to a 5-star from a 2 or 3. Which was nice. Drinks were free and they had hard-a and beer and stuff and never carded me. And they were always by our side. Most of the time by the time I finished one drink on the plane I had someone standing next to me offering me another. I got mildly drunk on the plane but slept it off the last hour or 2.

When we touched down we were lost as shit, but everyone here speaks english and is more than willing to help in english. I'm trying to use german to help me learn the language when I have a crutch like that. Oh wells. So, there was basically no customs. They asked if I had anything to declare, I didn't know what that means so I said no. They asked if I was here for business or holiday, I said holiday. They asked how long would I be there, I said a month, and it was done. Säed's guard didn't ask any questions. So we sat down in the airport to use the net to find the hotel we were to stay in, but it was pay-for net. strange coming from portland where wifi runs like tapwater... out of tubes. So, we wandered around looking for a cafe with free wifi, but nobody knows what wifi is or wireless fidelity or internet without wires or no-wire-net or any combination of those words in english mixed with a few words of german. So we wandered the streets for an hour or two when Saed said he'd just pay for net at a pay-for net cafe. We did that and found the hotel.

Once at the hotel Vanc and I set out to find and consume absynthe. We found just that, but I am pretty sure we got ripped off. The liqour stores didn't have it, but we bought half a bottle from a bar for €25. It is hard to haggle in a language you don't speak, with a currency you've never used for a product you've never tried. We went back to the hotel room and drank it and became endrunkened. It was nice and fun and indeed relatively lucid.

Saed slept through this all by the way, because he sleeps 16 hrs a day or suffers miserably. So I typed a couple brief drunken emails and made that silly blog post beneath this one.

I got upstairs and säed was still sleeping and vanc had passed out in the corner. That looked incredibly appealing to me, so I curled up in a ball on the bed, with my shoes and clothes on and slept.

We all woke up at the same time, like two hours later... you know what, the Subhumans are about to go on I think, I'll finish this when I next have email access.

oh man

so, we're in Frankfurt, and now it's time to reveal something most people already knew but I was afraid to post in public... we're going to the G8. So, there you have it, our purpose for this whole trip. The reason we're not ''fags'' for wanting to fly instead of trying to continue hopping (read the comments). I have a lot I want to say, but I may get frustrated and quit due to this piece of shit keyboard.

öäßµ€°§!!!

This is the most socially permissive town in the universe, I äm convinced. there's a porn shop on every block and everyone everywhere is drinking and smoking in public. I'm drunk on absynth at the moment, which is making typing extra difficult. I also got drunk on the plane, which was fun and free. I didn't even want to get drunk, but like any dumb fucking american, I can't help but take expensive things for free, even if I don't want them. Saed was motion-sick as shit, and was looking quite unhappy on the plane but is sleeping now. Vanc is doing well, though smoking like a chimney. Tonight I think we're going to go dumpstering for fun.

Umm, not sure what to say, tomorrow we hitch out to Berlin so it may be a hot sec before you hear from us again. Maybe I'll be sober by then.

it's a hell of a town

So, you're going to notice that some posts are extremely specific and detailed, and that will be when I have time to write down my thoughts, and other times I won't immediately have a chance to write, and I'll only have vague details for you. 5/13 is the first type of day, 5/14 was the second

5/13
1pm - Woke up. Wanted to wake up earlier but almost no natural light shined through. So I laid awake for a few hours, from maybe 11 to 1. Set out on a journey.

2.30 - Found St. Marks & Tompkins Square Park. Both are saturated with yuppie tourist fucks. FnB is at 3:30, so I'll sit.

4.00 - Still no FnB. Krusties in the park don't know anything about it and make fun of me for wearing a skirt as I walk away. I eat vegan pizza at world something or planet something. I walk to Bluestockings, drink some coffee and read.

5.00 - I take the long walk to Times Square, which sucks (not a surprise). I start walking in the direction of Penn Station, hoping to get distracted along the way because it's still only 7 and Vanc and Saed get in at 10:54. Not really enough time to make going back to the apartment worthwhile, but enough that it's a hell of a wait.

7.10 - Bryant Square has the bougiest public bathroom in the world.

7.40 - Arrive at Penn Station. Their train isn't on the arrival board and the Amtrak staff are jerks. I decide to walk to the world trade center area.

8.15 - I get juice and some swedish fish, and on my way out a woman is shouting "wobblie" in my direction, but I fail to make the connection that I'm wearing an IWW shirt. She wants to know where to get an IWW flag. She's very nice and asks if I'd like to join her for food. I say no because she's very emphatic and I'm feeling sort of shy today, and also I don't want to limit her choices to vegan ones.

8.20 - I regret declining because I'm bored as shit and have hours to wait. My legs and feet are tired so I walk back to Penn Station to rest. Their train is running late... expected to arrive at 11:14. So I read.

11.05 - Train arrives, we go get Indian food and come back to Leija's place.

5/14
10am - Didn't sleep, but finally everyone is up and ready to get up and go to the isle of Manhattan with me.

12pm - Long walk through Chinatown, which reeks of fish. It's like fish delivery day or something.

1 - VEGAN KNISHES!!!!!11shiftone. I didn't expect it but I found it. I was looking for samosas but I found vegan knishes instead which are scientifically shown to be at lest 230% more awesome.

1.45 - Reading at Bluestockings. I doze off for 10 minutes, and feel surprisingly refreshed.

3.30 - We go to the 4th St Food Coop then Whole Foods getting emergency vegan food for Germany. Braggs and Nutritional Yeast are paramount.

4 - Going back to the apartment

5 - Back at the apartment, we hang around and look at Germany stuff online until we pass out.

5/15
Saed's birthday and fly-out day. We fly out at 9pm. We're makin' a cake for Saed's birthday.

Technical Difficulties...

Minor setbacks. We're still in Portland. Three days in a row of no safely rideable trains. So on the the fourth day, we hitch, and don't get any rides. Our backup plans are now in place: Saed and Vanc are catching amtrak, Julia transferred her plane voucher over to me, and I'm flying into NYC on Saturday. Saed and vanc should be there Sunday. That is all for now.
